June 22, 1931: "Struck by a bolt of lightning while building a lookout station on Hall mountain east of Sullivan lake yesterday afternoon, J.S. Laughlin, 35, a resident of Greenacres, was severely burned about the scalp and right side. He is in a serious condition.
Dr. C.M. Canning, Ione, reported that a portion of the injured man's scalp was burned to a crisp.
Laughlin was carried 14 miles on a stretcher over a mountain trail into Ione. It took the rescue party more than 10 hours to bring the injured man out.
The bolt was so severe that bushes and trees where the lookout was being built were scorched. Dr. Canning said Laughlin has a chance to recover.
Laughlin is employed by the Kaniksu National Forest as a carpenter." (Spokane Daily Chronicle)

June 25, 1931: “Struck by lightning while at work on the building of a lookout station at Hall Mountain east of Sullivan lake, J.S. Laughlin, 36, of north Spokane county, a carpenter employed by the Kaniksu Forest Service, was severely burned about the head and shoulders, the bolt striking him in the head and passing down his right side..
The stroke occurred at about 2:30 p.m. Sunday during a violent storm that broke in the north part of the county.
Employees of the service brought Laughlin out by stretcher ten miles over mountain trails to a road. It required more than ten hours to bring out the injured man.
He was taken to the Ione hospital and placed under the care of Dr. Canning. Latest reports are that he will recover.
At about the same hour Sunday a lightning bolt struck and killed Glen Butler, lookout on Blacktail Mountain, 15 miles southeast of Sandpoint.” (The Newport Miner)
