July 17, 1937: "Mr. Whiting said that the resettlement administration has completed construction of one of the best lookouts in this district on Cliff ridge, east of Chewelah. The lookout overlooks the district lying from Kalispell range west to the Huckleberry range and north to Mill creek. The lookout has approximately 70-percent coverage over this area. Any lookout with 50-percent coverage is considered very good, Mr. Whiting said." (Colville Examiner)

May 20, 1939: “Lookouts were installed this week on Huckleberry mountain and Cliff Ridge as a part of the Kaniksu forest ranger program to chick fires as they start. Phone lines are also rapidly being completed to give lookouts throughout the area quick access to fire fighting patrols in case an out break is seen.” (The Colville Examiner)
