September 14, 1950: "Buck Yeley, lookout for the State Forestry Service at Greyback Mountain and Joe Thorp, lookout on top of the Simcoe Butte, just had to exercise their cherished American right of voting in the Tuesday election. Naturally the men couldn't leave their stations...as the forests are cinder dry...so Dick Sellers, State Fire Warden came to Goldendale to see what could be done about it. According to law a notary must witness their ballot casting, so County Clerk John A. Miller, accompanied Sellers to the two lookout stations, a distance of over 100 miles for the round trip. It would be a better world if we had more citizens like Yeley and Thorp who are appreciative of the right to help nominate and elect those to run our state, federal and county governments." (Goldendale Sentinel)
October 1, 1953: "Dewey Hapgood who took over the Grayback Lookout station a few weeks ago was home for provisions. He reports that just watching for smoke is a very lonely job." (Mt. Adams Sun)
April 5, 1956: "Miss Juanita Ward, sophomore at Whitworth College, Spokane, is enjoying her spring vacation with her parents. Juanita will spend her third summer as a State forest lookout on Grayback." (Mt. Adams Sun)
May 29, 1958: "Mrs. Wm. McLeod and Mrs. Francis Stine took Miss Jo Ann McLeod to Grayback Lookout Station in the Mount Adams district Monday morning where Jo Ann will spend the next few months. She was one of the Lyle high school graduates this year." (The Goldendale Sentinel)
June 12, 1958: "Mrs. William McLeod spent a night last week with her daughter Joan at Grayback Lookout. She reports Joan likes the work and is too busy to get lonesome." (The Goldendale Sentinel)
October 27, 1960: "Diana Andrew of Glenwood who spent last summer at a lookout on Grayback has exchanged the solitude of her tower for a Walla Walla College dormitory filled to capacity with 300 students.
Instead of peering through binoculars to locate fires, she will stare into a microscope to find microbes.
Diana, a prenursing student, is enrolled with 1300 other students at Walla Walla College." (Mt Adams Sun)
