September 20, 1957: "The State Department of National Resources' new lookout station on Skidder Hill above Discovery Bay opened Wednesday. No formal dedication ceremony was held, but visitors had a chance to inspect the station during an open house. Heading the official delegation was E. Rodney Downen, chief of the department's Port Angeles district. Other visiting officials included Harold Nyberg, district ranger and Sheriff Miles Brown of Jefferson County, also attending were representatives of the are pulp and paper mills, the Quilcene schools, U.S. Forest Service and the Washington Forest Fire Association. William Muench is manning the new station for the remainder of this season. During the open house, Downen said the radio and fire finder were in operation and the visibility was ideal for good observation." (Port Angeles Evening News)
