August 4, 1966: "A forest service employe at High Rock lookout in Mineral district spotted smoke to the south Wednesday. Suspecting a forest blaze during dry conditions, he reported the smoke. There was no fire. It turned out to be the smoke from a mill at Packwood. 'His vision was good,' said John Czemerys of Packwood ranger district. 'He spotted the smoke 12 or 15 miles away.'
