May 1, 1944: Aircraft Warning Service Station 'Charlie 2-1' utilized existing facilities owned by the State of Washington on Simpson Logging Company land. The station was operated co-operatively between the Simpson Logging Company and the State of Washington. At the end of service to site was retained by the State for the continued use as a fire detection point. (Report of AWS Stations, May 1, 1944)
June 29, 1956: "A new fire lookout station of the latest type will be put into operation by the State Forestry division in mid-July on one of the highest points in Mason county.
It will be known as the South Mountain lookout, about seven miles northeast of the Matlock store, on an elevation of 3,100 feet.
The new lookout will replace the Simpson lookout situated to the east on a 1000-foot elevation.
Warden Francis Wright of the Shelton State Forestry district announced the construction of the South Mountain lookout. He said Mrs. Roe Franklin would be transferred to the new station from the Simpson lookout." (The Daily Chronicle)
